Modern Social Theory
[ send me this paper ]
The "modern" world has different meaning for different
individuals and different studies. Most would agree that it encompasses the period from the beginning of the First World War until the present. For Social theorists, "modern"
must connote the most recent era of significant social change. The unique role of social theorists within this concept of modern society will be: first, to explain the interaction of technology with the evolution of social interaction and, second, to pursue new avenues of human development; perhaps in the incorporation of technology into the heretofore human processes. This 5 page paper examines a few of the social theories pertinent to
current thought and proposes how the factors inherent to these theories will be of importance to the evolving modern era. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Modernism and Postmodernism: Sociological Changes in a Modern World
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page discussion of these sociological definitions. Specifies that the term "modernity" is used in most cases in reference to the emergence of modern world religions, religions which had evolved in response to a dramatically changing environment. Indeed, sociologists have invested considerable energy in understanding the evolution of these religions and the impact of these changes on our culture as a whole. Consequently they have devised an extensive terminology to describe the changes which they observe. Postmodernism, as the term would suggest, is a subsequent stage to modernism but it is a term which encompasses a considerably broader aspect of society than religion alone. Perhaps one of the most interesting and potentially devastating implications which has resulted in response to postmodernity is that of globalization and its consequent contributions to world politics and economics. Bibliography lists 11 sources.
