Aristotle on Hamlet
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay that analyzes Hamlet according Aristotelian principles for tragedy. In his book Poetics, the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle outlined his beliefs on drama and what constituted the characteristics of tragedy. Over the ensuing millennia, Aristotle's perspective has influenced countless generations of playwrights and also how the public understands the nature of tragedy. By examining a few of the factors that Aristotle considered crucial to tragedy, it is possible to discern what this great philosopher might have thought about one of history's most noted tragic plays, Shakespeare's Hamlet, which Aristotle would have undoubtedly endorsed as an exemplary tragedy of the first order. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

As You Like It vs. Merchant of Venice / Shakespeare's Portrayal of Women
[ send me this paper ]
The comedies of Shakespeare are often the forum for comment concerning the assignment of gender roles that were true for the Elizabethan society of which he was a part. Under the auspices of the pen and the play he was able to portray women in ways that were not generally acceptable. The characters of Rosalind from 'As You Like It' and Portia from 'A Merchant of Venice' are two cases in point. This 10 page paper examines the use of dialogue, character and costuming in the presentation of gender roles. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Aspects of "Romeo and Juliet"
[ send me this paper ]
This 3 page paper argues that we can see three aspects of the play as adjuncts to the idea of sickness: first is the plague imagery that runs through much of the work; the second is the idea of the feud between the Capulets and Montagues as a metaphor for sickness; the last is the idea that Romeo and Juliet and their love is the cure for this illness. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Aspects of Race in Othello

August Wilson: "Romeo And Juliet" Race Reversal
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. If given the opportunity to comment upon the notion of race reversal in William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," black playwright August Wilson would like say much the same as any other enlightened individual: the play would not have had nearly – if any at all – the same impact that it has throughout history. Considering a production where black actors play the Capulets and the Montagues played by white actors, Wilson would certainly agree with the fact that the entire essence of Shakespeare's intent would be without merit, inasmuch as a significant element of the performance revolves around social status. As such, one might readily surmise that race plays an integral role in Shakespeare's works. If such a production were assembled, where black actors performed the parts of the Capulets and white actors the Montagues, the director might be thinking that audiences would be blind to the notable yet be fully accepting of it. However, this would certainly be a difficult change to make in one of history's most beloved tragedies, inasmuch as metamorphosing the racial content of "Romeo and Juliet" not only alters the play's physical appearance, but it also changes the core meaning of social acceptance. Indeed, one can readily argue that Shakespeare's original choice of race was intended to reflect each character's social class. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Battle of the Sexes in “Midsummer Night’s Dream”
[ send me this paper ]
This 7 page paper examines William Shakespeare’s wonderful play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” with regard to the couples in the play who are fighting, why they are doing so, and how the conflicts are resolved.

Behn's Rover & As You Like It
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay that argues that Shakespeare's As You Like It (c. 1599) and Alpha Behn's play The Rover or, the Banish'd Cavaliers (1677) are two instances where playwrights use comedies as vehicles for social criticism. Both plays portray strong, intelligent women who defy the social and sexual conventions of their time. In so doing, these characters are both contrary to the way that women were generally perceived within the patriarchal society of their centuries.
