Do Successful Companies Cause Their Own Failure
[ send me this paper ]
A 14 page paper. The catalyst for this paper is an article entitled The Architecture Of Simplicity written by Professor Danny Miller in 1993. Miller offers a theory that is contrary to what most other writers in terms of what causes a company to fail. Miller argued that successful companies cause their own failure because they focus on one narrow simple theme, activity, product or issue to the exclusion of other activities or products. In other words, the company moves into a mode of simplicity and this will eventually cause the company to fail. The writer overviews the article and presents comments from other writers both on Miller's theories and on other issues, such as the product life cycle. The writer responds to this question: Over time, does a successful dominant firm's narrow focus fail to recognize the end of a product life cycle or is the firm a victim of simplicity? and makes a final conclusion based on all the literature presented, which is that there is a causative relationship between simplicity and the product life cycle. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Does an Employer Have the Right to Demand that an Employee Quit
Smoking
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses the question of the
“rights” of an employer to demand that an employee quit smoking,
both at the workplace and at the employee’s home. Just as an
employer does not have the right to determine what religious
practices an employee follows, whether they consume alcohol,
whether they are married or single, the employer cannot dictate
that an employee not smoke tobacco in the privacy of his or her
own home. It can even be compared to making some sort of
requirement that an employee not watch videos on television,
cheer for a team that is not sponsored by the company, or drink
tea rather than coffee. When one considers it in such a context,
the issue is clearly absurd. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Does Audit Reduce Bias in Financial Reporting?
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page paper seeking to answer the question of the title. Bias in financial reporting was documented more than 100 years ago, and it has been an ongoing problem since that time. Auditing is thought to reduce that bias, but does it have its full intended effect? Research indicates that deep bias begins with management and perhaps away from financial activities. It also indicates that auditing causes alteration of financial reports well before they are made public, meaning that it does indeed reduce bias in financial reporting. Sarbanes-Oxley is causing changes in basic accounting operations in many companies, which in the future will have a wealth of data that should lend itself well to research in auditing's effect on bias. Includes an abstract. Bibliography lists 9 sources.
