A. Phillip Randolph

Asa Philip Randolph (1889-1979) was the most significant civil rights leader to emerge from the labor movement (Stein, 1991). His career as a political activist begins early in the twentieth century, decades before the civil rights movement and examination of his work suggests that his early successes in gaining rights for black Americans laid the necessary groundwork upon which 1960s civil rights movement was built.
